Road to Advocacy
I'm Jp Gomez, and my life's journey has led me to a deep commitment to public service, specifically in the realm of special education. Throughout my experiences, I have discovered my true passion for understanding the intricacies of the learning processes and advocating for services to support identified areas of need.
Before pursuing my graduate studies, I embarked on a quest to find my purpose, which led me to the Learning Disabilities Association. Immersed in this environment, I gained an invaluable introduction to the unique challenges faced by individuals with learning disabilities. It sparked a fascination within me to understand how we think and learn.
Seeking further engagement, I transitioned to Advocates for Children, where I served as a helpline Advocate over 16 years ago. This role exposed me to the shortcomings of the special education system and the countless families in desperate need of support. Motivated to drive change from within, I became a School Psychologist in New York, choosing a path that would allow me to help children and families from a place of understanding and empathy.
One undeniable truth emerged on my first year as a School psychologist: no one enters the field of education with the intent of perpetuating the flaws of a broken system. Every individual I met joined this field with a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of children. This realization has shaped my approach to advocacy, rooted in collaboration while relentlessly pushing for what is rightly owed under the regulations.
I have spent over a thousand hours negotiating at the IEP table, crafting more than 1,500 IEPs and conducting assessments for nearly 2,000 students. The bulk of my expertise lies in assessment, eligibility determination and comprehensive understanding of developmental delays in communication, motor, cognitive, adaptive and social emotional areas.
My career as a School Psychologist brought immense satisfaction, as I became a pillar in my school and community. I built meaningful connections with families, teachers and administration deeply understanding their roles and finding the most effective ways to support the children. Additionally, I have extensive experience working with preschool children, having assessed and written IEPs for hundreds of young learners. As a dedicated case-worker in early intervention, I have also actively participated in over 100 IFSP meetings, ensuring that families receive the support they need from the very beginning of their child's educational journey.
I have transitioned my career with a renewed sense of purpose, driven by unwavering passion for advocating for parents and children in the special education system. Guided by years of dedicated work, I now offer comprehensive advocacy from a unique perspective. With deep knowledge, unwavering support, and empowering guidance, I am here to help parents navigate the complexities of special education. Together, we will overcome challenges, create positive change, and pave the way for a brighter future in your child's education. Let my experience and dedication merge with your journey as we correct course and reposition your child's education.
I offer my support and expert guidance and invite you to reach out and connect with me. Let us embark on this journey together, where your child's future becomes our shared mission.
